Technical Doctorate at Northern Technical University Discusses the Impact of Financial Awareness on Financial Sustainability and the Mediating Role of Financial Strategies

A technical doctoral dissertation in Business Administration Technologies was discussed at the Administrative Technical College / Mosul, Northern Technical University, by the student Barshank Hashim Kareem. The dissertation was entitled:

“The Impact of Financial Awareness on Financial Sustainability: Testing the Mediating Role of Financial Strategies – An Analytical Study of a Sample of Companies Listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange for the Period 2020–2025.”

The discussion was held on Sunday morning, August 30, 2026, in Al-Hikma Hall at the college.

The study aimed to investigate the impact of institutional financial awareness on the financial sustainability of companies listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange, as well as to examine the mediating role of financial strategies in this relationship. It sought to develop an integrated framework combining financial awareness through its dimensions of financial knowledge, financial behavior, and financial perception, together with financial strategies and their implications for the level of corporate financial sustainability.

The study adopted a quantitative approach using actual data extracted from the financial statements of a sample of 18 listed companies representing the telecommunications, industrial, services, and banking sectors. A composite index of institutional financial awareness was constructed based on its three dimensions, while financial strategies were measured through indicators reflecting financing and investment policies.

The study employed the Fixed Effects Model for panel data to analyze unobserved individual differences among companies over time. It also tested for cointegration using the Pedroni and Kao tests.

The results revealed the existence of a stable long-term equilibrium relationship among financial awareness, financial strategies, and financial sustainability. They also showed that financial knowledge and financial perception have a positive long-term effect on financial sustainability, while the effects of certain financial strategies on sustainability varied according to the nature of financing and investment decisions.

Furthermore, the path analysis revealed a partial mediating role of financial strategies in the relationship between financial awareness and financial sustainability. This finding highlights the importance of channeling institutional financial awareness through more prudent financing and investment strategies in order to enhance the financial sustainability of companies.
